A bold initiative by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, announced tonight:

The Orchestra is passionate about sharing the experience of exceptional live orchestral music-making and inspiring new generations of classical music lovers. The 2017/18 Season reinforces this by offering all 18 year olds and under free admission to Season concerts. In addition, teachers accompanying pupils to concerts can attend free of charge. The SCO will also continue to offer Under 26s and unemployed £6 tickets, making concerts accessible and welcoming to all.

They did a similar thing for the Opera North’s ring at RFH. Most walked out half way through Rheingold after munching their crisps to answer their phones
By all means allow younger people access but teach them how to behave as well, some of us pay good money to see these performances.

What is this “for free” thing?! What is wrong with people? The next thing we know under18s will be able to attend any concert FOR CHEAP!!! That’s precisely the amount of sense “for free” makes. Really Norman.

  • Ruben Greenberg says:

This may be a good idea, but not necessarily. I don’t think the price of admission is the only thing keeping youngsters away from Classical music concerts. It doesn’t keep them away from rock concerts, football games and discotheques. There exist other cultural and sociological reason for their lack of interest.
