Wexford has just announced its 2017 menu:

Luigi Cherubini’s Medea

(premiered Paris 1859, last seen when?)

Jacopo Foroni’s Margherita

(premiered Milan, 1848, never recorded)

Franco Alfano’s Risurrezione

(premiered Turin 1904, awaiting resurrection)

Keen to see two out of these three.

  • rita says:

oooh, why doesn’t someone do “Toussaint”?

  • Brian B says:

Medea was premiered in 1797, not 1859. If they are doing the Franz Lachner version it’s not exactly a rarity. Rissurezione used to be heard fairly often in this country, mostly Chicago, because it was a Mary Garden vehicle. Most of the old librettos you find in the States are in French because she sang it in that language. Olivero also sang it.

  • Knowing Clam says:

Opera national de Lorraine has done Medea…as has Glimmerglass.

  • Michael Lee says:

Wexford announced this lineup quite a while ago, while the full programme (including short works, etc.) was launched on March 2, so what does “just announced” refer to?

  • Theodore McGuiver says:

Medea: Toulouse and Lisbon (?) in 2005.

  • Caravaggio says:

Medea at Covent Garden: 1959 with Callas and Vickers, c. Rescigno (Lachner version, in Italian); 1989 with Plowright and Steblianko, c. Ermler (in French)

  • Alexander says:

Hibla Gerzmava dazzles in Medea nowadays , now she is to perform in Anna Bolena at Scala ( in about a week ) … as Peter said she is a “major artist” e

  • Sue says:

How about performing some of the operas by Haydn and Schubert?

  • John G. Deacon says:

Medea : June 2012 in Valencia (cond. Mehta)

  • John Borstlap says:

That Risurrezzione is really good, in early Puccini style (à la Bohème). It makes me want to also write a forgotten opera, should not be so difficult nowadays.
