Far from Trump, LA Phil flaunts friendship with Mexico
mainPresident Trump can say what he likes.
So long as Gustavo Dudamel is music director in Los Angeles, there will be closer ties with neighbours to the south.
The Dude has announced a 10-day ‘CDMX — Music From Mexico City’ series in next season’s plans.
He says: ‘We keep creating these bridges… As I said when I started as music director, it’s about showing that we are one America.’
This is pathetic symbolism. Why doesn’t he focus on the crumbling state of his real home, Venezuela, and stop speaking for America?
Why? Probably because he knows that nothing he could do or say about Venezuela would do any good, though it could possibly do harm to El Sistema.
I’m afraid that probably nothing will shake Maduro loose and begin to repair Venezuela short of a revolution or an invasion, and I doubt that any other country has much of an appetite to invade Venezuela.
The LA Phil is his JOB, and he is planning WORK through cooperation and, as he puts it, bridge-building — in this case with a near-neighbour. Lay off on his personal background and let him do his job, which in this instance he appears to be doing brilliantly.

Mexico is not always entirely safe for classical music, though. I know of a European conductor who came for a guest appearance in Mexico and was abducted from the airport and kept hostage by a couple of players who wanted to force their board to carry-out a pay rise.
