Pittsburgh mourns its bass trombone
mainMusicians in the Pittsburgh Symphony and trombonists across America are lamenting the death of Murray Crewe, a popular and witty performer, the first Canadian to play bass trombone in a US orchestra.
Murray who was in his 50s, went from the Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec in 1987 to the Utah Symphony, then to the Toronto Symphony and in 1993, to the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Our sympathies to his wife Linda, children Ralph and Emilie, friends and colleagues.
Such a fine brass section in Pittsburg. He had some wonderful moments on recordings, including some fine work on Resphigi with Massey. RIP

Murray was a wonderful friend and colleague. The time I shared with him in the Toronto Symphony was laugh filled and great music making. He will be sadly missed.
There was nothing like Murray’s sound in Prokofiev’s Montagues and Capulets.
I taught Murray in high school. He was witty and oh so very talented. When in grade 10 A VSO oboist commented after an ear training clinic..”that kid is gifted”
Murray and I were neighbors in Pittsburgh. Whether playing music or just hanging out, Murray was absolutely fantastic fun company. You will be dearly missed by many, Murray!
