Pity that NJ’s replacements never conduct the repertoire that he had planned to perform (this time Domestica, last time Dollar Symphony).
I wish him a speedy recovery. He always puts together fascinating programs, and his recordings must take up a quarter of my record collection. Furthermore, he seems like a really nice guy. I sent him a letter once while he music director of the NJ Symphony, and he not only took the time to respond, but sent along a recording of Arthur Kapp’s oratorio “Job.” How could I not be a fan for life? Also, who else would have been allowed to conduct the Hans Rott symphony with the Philadelphia Orchestra?
He is a fine conductor and a true gentleman, who took the time out of his busy day to grant me an interview back in 1982 when I had some questions about Soviet orchestras and conductors. I also met his wife and their son Paavo, then a tall and thin twenty-year-old with a full head of hair.
I wish him a speedy and complete recovery. And perhaps some appearances here in Los Angeles.
Neeme Jarvi has also withdrawn from two concerts with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra on February 17 and 18. All good wishes to him for a speedy recovery. His concerts with the RSNO are always eagerly looked forward to by audiences and orchestra alike. Like Ross Amico above, my record collection is packed with Neeme Jarvi’s recordings. Never frightened to take risks,Jarvi brings a sort of musical alchemy to the art of conducting – especially in unfamiliar repertoire. Orchestral players are never bored under his direction. It shows, both on the concert platform and in his many recordings. Get well soon. And Haste Ye Back to Scotland.
When Jarvi recorded the complete Glazunov symphonies I was a fan from that moment.
Both father and son are wonderful advocates for art music. I wish the father well and hope he’s back on the podium soon.

I was heading up to Scotland for his magnificent Tchaikovsky (Hamlet, Manfred). Understand it’s a problem with the knees and he WILL not sit to conduct… So could be worse. My absolute hero among conductors, hoping that he’s preparing to be sedentary…
