The talks are stalled, reportedly over how much time off the music director gets while on tour, but Thielemann, 57, told the Dresdner Morgenpost today that he intends to stay beyond 2019, when his contract expires.

‘I get on well with the orchestra, they work well with me… In the German-speaking world, my position is the best,’ he said.

Good news. Before ugly discusscions arise: The English translation “In the German-speaking world, my position is the best” can be read in two directions. “my position is the best” could mean that he himself is regarded to be in the best position or to have an excelent standing (egomanic reading). However, the German original has the meaning that the position itself, the tasks and opportunities are wonderful.

    • Max Grimm says:

‘In the German-speaking regions, my post/job is the best there is’ would have probably been a better translation of what Thielemann said.

      • John Borstlap says:

Translations from the German almost always mean a reduction of meaning. As Sally here points out, her English version of Thomas Mann’s ‘Doctor Faustus’ is half as thick as the German original, which she claims is used in German gyms for weight lifting (she has family in Oberammergau).

  • Kai says:

“In German-speaking countries, my position (meant: Being the Chief of Staatskapelle) is the best”

  • DESR says:

    Square peg, square hole.

    • John Borstlap says:

Hilarious….. but let it be understood that at least half of the Dresdeners is not square at all, and protested against the Wutbürger. And yes, most of them are round, due to the Dresdener beers.

    Bravo maestro Thielemann
