Italy says classical audiences are getting younger

A report in La Repubblica says that Italians are bucking the zimmer-frame trend.

Classical record sales are up 20 percent, Rome is staging classical raves, Naples sells opera tickets for 7 Euros to the under-30s, La Fenice is showing an 11% increase in under-40 online ticket buyers. Classical is looking sexy once again.

    I spotted about a 2.7% increase in twenty-somethings at Benjamin Grosvenor’s recital last Sunday. But about 2.7% of the oldsters stayed home, so there was no net gain.

      However, a report from the Warwick Commission on the Future of Cultural Value shows that 58.5% of those 2.7% oldsters saved their pension money to to go another concert the next day, the remaining 41.5% got unwell after an oyster lunch at their old people’s home and postponed their concert attendance for a week.
