The unhappy tenor has called off a forthcoming Japan tour, according to his website.

The earliest he will return to singing is at the Nobel Prize concert in Stockholm on December 8.

  • Lydia Wahlberg says:

Well, he must know it. There is nothing on two websites. The cancel is not surprising. Maybe we can start concentrating on other tenors like Matthew Polenzani. He is wonderful, but then I don’t know enough about music.

  • Lydia Wahlberg says:

Oops, meant to say he does not know.

  • Linda Blandford says:

Making do with some of his wonderful recordings but feeling so sad for him.

    • Una says:

Well, whatever the reason, he’ll at least be happier to have cancelled and not have to do something he doesn’t want to do, particularly if he isn’t well or if he’s generally had enough of the life – singers do. It’s never been more demanding with people scrutinising every note you sing, every nuance, replaying on the internet, often by people who don’t sing themselves but know everything about singing!!! And then on top of all that, the endless international travel by plane and time differences, which kills people vocally and emotionally. Wish him well, and hope he is okay.

  • Una says:

8th December is only next week so perhaps he’s got a very bad cold, which I have at the moment, and can’t sing! It does happen at this time of year.

    • Mike Schachter says:

Many of us can’t sing without heavy colds…

    • Nick says:

He himself has made it quite clear it’s not a bad cold. He has cancelled about everything for more than 6 weeks. The reason is given on his website – “the side effects of a medicine made burst a small blood vessel on my vocal cords. To avoid permanent damage, I have to stop singing until the haematoma has completely subsided.”

Any doctors among posters here can comment on this. I certainly can’t, although I myself have never heard of this ailment in singers resulting from prescribed medication.

      • Vienna calling says:

On his Facebook page it said that the blood vessel thing was cured and that he had to cancel the ‘comeback’ concert in Gütersloh because of a cold. The real reason for cancelling Madrid and Japan is now anyone’s guess.

        • Waltraud Becker says:

          11. November on FB:
          Liebe Freunde,
Euer Jonas Kaufmann

  • Holly Golightly says:

He’s reminding me of Carlos Kleiber with each passing week!!! The Japanese will understand the irony too.

  • Cica Didi says:

I had one day meeting on 22nd in Madrid and was fortunate enough to find a ticket for recital. But now as cancelled ,it was too good to be true. Hopefuly he will be recovered and might have another chance for live concert.

  • Cantantelirico says:

Don’t worry, his agents will send Ramon Vargas to fill his shoes.

  • Olga says:

Published in “Forum Opera” 3 days ago:
“After the cancellations of Paris and then lately Gütersloh and Madrid, the black series continues for Jonas Kaufmann. The German tenor has announced on its site the cancellation of its tour in Japan, scheduled from 28 to 3 December. The reason for cancellation is unchanged: illness. Still according to its site, December promises less loaded with only two concerts, the 8 in Stockholm and the 12 in Monte Carlo. Will he be able to do that? January, on the other hand, includes two important events: the inauguration of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg on 11 and 12 with the creation of “Reminiscence”, a work composed for him by Wolfgang Rihm, and then from 18, a highly anticipated “Lohengrin” at the Opéra National de Paris. We imagine how this series of cancellations must displease Jonas Kaufmann and wish him a speedy recovery.”
I am among his fans who wish him fast recovery and returning to concert halls and opera theaters.
