Alpesh Chauhan, 25, is to be principal conductor of La Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini in Parma, the maestro’s birthplace, from September 2017.

Alpesh-Chauhan

A truck driver’s son, Alpesh was Andris Nelson’s assistant conductor in Birmingham and made his Proms debut this summer.

He says: ‘I really enjoy working with the Filarmonica Toscanini, and we have already developed a great relationship performing Beethoven’s Eroica, Rachmaninov’s 2nd Symphony and Brahms’s 1st Symphony. Next season, we have three programmes which I have thoroughly enjoyed putting together: a programme of Kodaly’s Dances of Galanta, Mozart’s D-minor Piano Concerto with Olli Mustonen and Sibelius’s 1st Symphony; a Mozart-Stravinsky programme; and a concert of Gubaidulina and Bruckner 9.’

  • Halldor says:

Lucky them. He’s a remarkable talent – and extremely hardworking.

  • Wally Francis says:

This is good news – Alpesh is a smashing young man, totally devoted to music in every way, and believe me he is going places!!

Yet another superb product made in Birmingham!

  • Barbara says:

what is the relevance of being a truck driver’s son?

    • Tim Walton says:

Presumably to point out that he was self taught and not born into a musical family.

Nothing wrong with that. Well, certainly not in Birmingham. Can’t answer for people who come from London and never visit up here!!

    • Hilary says:

Funnily enough, Leonard Bernstein was a hairdresser’s son. I like to know these things even though I suppose they’re a bit at a tangent.

      • Jerome Hoberman says:

Not that there’s anything wrong with hairdressers as parents, but Bernstein’s father wasn’t one. He was a businessman who invested in a permanent wave (“perm”) machine invention and became well-off selling it.
