The Russian baritone, who is receiving treatment for brain cancer, made a strong start to the season in Sochi earlier this month. But he has just notified Vienna that he is too unwell to sing the title role in Verdi’s Simon Boccangera, due to run from Friday.

He will be replaced by Marco Vratogna.

We wish Dmitri a continued recovery.

Dimi, Your voice lifted me through hours of heartbreak when my husband died last year…and continues to do so. He was 97 and I had taken care of him for many years so to Flo, I say, for you also I offer all the prayers I can muster. In some way, we are connected. Even from Alaska you are both loved.
