On his ocean journey to New York, where he was to premiere his Third Concerto, Rachmaninoff practiced on a keyboard painted on wood, so as not to disturb shipboard passengers. The orchestral accompaniment was, of course, in his head.
I learnt Milton Babbitt’s Philomel in the tiny aft cabin of our yacht, Octavia II, with a small keyboard and the laptop propped open for the electronics. That was surreal. I managed though!!
