The arrangement of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy as the official European Union anthem was made in 1989 by the French composer Claude Langevin, who died on September 8 at the age of 87.

Langevin also wrote, on commission from Brussels, a Europa Sinfonia and a Symphonie Liberté.

We hear from pals in the Vienna Philharmonic that Sophie Dartigalongue, a bassoonist snatched from the Berlin Phil, has passed her year’s trial with flying colours – on a unanimous vote of the players.

She is now officially principal bassoon of the Vienna opera orchestra.

In three years’ time she will become a full member of the Vienna Phil, another small step towards gender balance.

John Lambros, who died on Thursday in Charleston, was concertmaster of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra – renamed the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra – for longer than anyone can remember.

In all he played in the first violins for 55 years – and goes straight into the Slipped Disc list of longest serving orchestral musicians.

The visiting Italian company is giving an ad hoc performance at 2pm today in Moscow’s GUM store.

Not a bad idea, since the former shopping preserve of Soviet nomenklatura wives closely resembles one of Franco Zeffirelli’s sets at La Scala.

The elegant and often innovation record label Naive has run out of time.

It was put into administration last month, and bought out by a digital distribution firm, Believe.

About half the work force, 25 staff, will keep their jobs. t remains to be seen whether there will be continued production after the current season’s releases are put out.

Naive was founded in 1997 by ex-Virgin France chief Patrick Zelnick and caught the eye with striking design and a fresh stream of mostly French and Francophone artists, among them Lisa de la Salle, Anne Gastinel and the Diotima Quartet.
