He has been incredibly generous to several arts education organizations, including the Harlem School of the Arts. He was more than a trumpet star. Mr. Alpert is the “A” in A & M Records, one of the foremost popular music record labels of the 1960s through the ’90s.

  • PaulD says:

He also donated $30 million to UCLA, helping establish the Herb Alpert School of Music there.

  • Larry says:

Mr. Woodruff is quite correct. (One would expect that from the executive director of the Harrisburg Symphony!)

There’s the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA and the Herb Alpert School of Music at California Institute of the Arts.

  • Stephen Jones says:

His foundation also funds the International Trumpet Guild’s “Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition” every two years. Generosity!

  • Jeffrey Biegel says:

Herb is one of the most generous donors as a celebrity musician. I applaud him for his generosity in aiding the studies of the next generation of musicians. (His 1960s recordings still ring in my ears. Loved them all!)
