A German composer called Martin Gerigk has reduced the soaring Vaughan Williams masterpiece to string sextet.

See what you think. A bit anaemic?

You are watching a net premiere on Slipped Disc.

The soloist is Eric Silberger.

Quite lovely to my ear – not anaemic at all. Less gravity for the lark to escape, perhaps. Soaring and fine. What a wonderful way to make this work more portable.

I think it is a beautiful piece in any form.
A late Muslim friend requested it for his funeral, years ago,and I used the Pickus Zuckerman recorded version, which I think is the best of all.
For years, after, our public broadcasting radio station received requests to hear it, again and again, from people having heard it first at that funeral.
    It’s powerful music.
The violinist in this version is very, very fine.
