The incoming music director of the New York Philharmonic – already the top-paid maestro in America at $5m last year in Dallas – has a fulltime second job with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, which he recently extended.

But that leaves his summers free.

Er, no more. He has signed up to lead the Gstaad Conducting Academy, which pays in Swiss francs. Two years to start with a renewal option.

    Dallas, not Houston.

I understand from one musician who works in one of his orchestras that he will arrive in the early morning after massively long overnight flights across the Pacific and then be at rehearsal about 3 hours later. Apart from the strain of such constant long-distance commuting on his body and mind with 11 or 12 hour time changes, I wonder what happens when flights are delayed? I know quite a number of performing companies in Asia have a clause in the contracts stating visiting artists must arrive at least 24 hours in advance.

I’m going to guess that he books the first class sleeper bunks in his trans-Pacific travels and arrives rested.

He’s had time to test the premise out by now and must have decided it works for him.

people in business world add up many more jobs than this very often and always earn x10 or more….quality goes around the world, and mr van Zweden s quality is so high everybody wants him!
    question of demand and offer….
