The death has been announced of the bass-baritone Günter von Kannen, a powerful and convincing Alberich at Bayreuth. He was 76.

Günter von Kannen was given his Bayreuth breakthrough by Daniel Barenboim in 1982, in the Harry Kupfer Ring cycle. A member of the Karlsruhe and Zurich companies, he appeared many times at Bayreuth and on other major stages.

slight correction, Von Kannen first appeared in Bayreuth in1988.
He sang Alberich and later in 1990, Klingsor and remained a Bayreuth regular until 2001.

Hi Phyllis, if you check the Bayreuth Festival performance data archive, you will see that the first year of the Küpfer-Barenboim Ring was 1988

  • Kim Begley says:

I had the privilege of working with him in the Flimm Ring at Bayreuth. Our rehearsals were wonderfully funny and creative. I’ll never forget the frog in the box or the Greek dancing. What a glorious man and such a talent. God rest you well my friend, Kimx.
