We hear that Bayreuth has signed biceps baritone Günther Groissböck to sing Veit Pogner in Barry Kosky’s new Meistersinger next summer.

He will follow that with Gurnemanz in the 2018 Parsifal, building up to Wotan in the 2020 Ring.

Until I saw the top of the tweet referring to this, I was sure it was from the Barihunks Twitter. “Biceps baritone” – nice!

On a first glance I really thought Tzimon Barto is going to make his Green Hill debut………

  • Theodore McGuiver says:

    Nice. Good singer, lovely bloke.

Good? He’s fantastic. He has great musical intelligence, elegant phrasing, taste. Best Sarastro in 10 years. Also a satisfying Vodník, Gesler, Orest. He will be a fine Gurnemanz, Walküre Wotan and SF Wanderer.

Not sure about Rheingold. To my ears he is naturally a bass, not a bass-baritone, although being young he can get up there (as Hotter and Moll could), and certainly not a baritone. One assumes the tattoos were for some role he was singing.

He’s a wonderful Baron Ochs too! He has the right Viennese twang. The Vienna production was the first time I thought Baron Ochs actually could be sexy!

Also a great Orestes at Munich.

  • Theodore McGuiver says:

Interesting point concerning Ochs. After all, he’s the Marschallin’s cousin, and she’s only in her early thirties. I’ve never understood why he’s always had to be portrayed as a sexagenarian. It should be his behaviour that puts Sophie off him, not his age.

  • Stefan Treddel says:

He is not a baritone!!! How do you come up with your headlines? Not knowing a famous singer is bad enough but not knowing roles and repertoire is simply embarassing…
