Marc Minkowski has fallen sick.

He’s replaced tomorrow night by a young Swiss, Lorenzo Viotti, in an odd concert of Rodrigo and Turina.

Lorenzo, who won last year’s Salzburg Conducting contest, is son of the late conductor Marcello Viotti.

So sorry to hear about Mark. Good luck, Lorenzo. I am certain your dad is watching over you. He was a very special musician and friend.

“An odd concert of Rodrigo and Turina”??? Since when is Rodrigo, esp. his famous guitar concerto, Concierto de Aranjuez considered odd?

Joaquin Turina (1882-1949) is considered to be one of Spain’s leading symphonic composers. He’s mainstream and played regularly in Spain. Spanish conductors such as Juanjo Mena and Jesus Lopez Cobos have given his works international exposure, but I guess the world is slow to take note.

Lorenzo Viotti was given one of his first big breaks in Spain: he was the 2013 winner of the Cadaques (Barcelona) conducting competition.

He’s been a popular guest conductor with several Spanish orchestras, so it’s logical that he is comfortable with Spanish orchestral repertoire. I’m sure he conducts it magnificently and hopefully doesn’t consider it “odd” at all!
