In a new interview with ForumOpera, the reborn baritone says he’s eyeing up Parsifal (he’s just missed his chance at Bayreuth).

Je voudrais chanter Amfortas. Je vais examiner Mandryka dans Arabella de Strauss. Peut-être d’autres rôles d’autres compositeurs…

  • Respect says:

Yeah, my ninety year old aunt wants to sing Sarastro.

Domingo was a terrible, unstylish and heavily accented Parsifal, why should one expect that as he nears 80 with a weak and wobbly low and middle that it would be acceptable. But, hey, if it sells tickets and gets him a bunch of blumenmaedchen to “mentor” why not?

    • Tristan says:

ist all ridiculous and what a sad story. He was such a fantastic singer, a legend already – his flirting with one baritone role like Simon Boccanegra was highly respected and the way he acted astonishing and touching. Still, like one Italian critic rightly said ”meliore non-baritono del mundo’ – stick with incomparable George London as Amfortas and Cappuccilli or Bruson as real Verdi baritones when you want to listen to Italian opera!!!!! Even Hampson, Keenlyside etc all non suitable for this repertoire!

    • John Borstlap says:

If his voice is wobbly and suffering from inconsistencies, he would be perfect for Amfortas whose part is 99,9% lamentation about his miserable condition.

  • Peter Owen says:

I do agree with the above. His Italianate, highly spinto tenor was never really suited to Wagner. Or Mozart, Donizetti, early Verdi and Berlioz come to think of it. But you’ve got to admire his breadth and stamina.

  • David Boxwelll says:

I’m thinking Titurel is really more his fach these days.
