Luciano Pavarotti joins the anti-Trump backlash

The Republican candidate has been using the great tenor’s Nessun Dorma recording in his warm-ups.

His widow, Nicoletta, and other family members have told local media in Modena that they want him to stop, saying that Pavarotti’s human values were incompatible with Trump’s. Which is certifiably true.

The best way to stop him is for Decca to take out an injunction against the possible next president of the USA.

Won’t happen.

Queen should take one out too. He entered the stage on Monday to the tune of We Are the Champions. At the time I doubted it was used with permission — now I doubt it more. Anyway, what’s the anti-foreign bigot who wants to “make America great again” and close out “others” with walls and deportations and bans doing using the anthem of a Zanzibari-born Parsi Zoroastrian gay?

After his wife’s (i.e. Mrs Obama’s) speech, it is easy to see that the outsider has not come equipped with people who know the ropes when it comes to checking things.

  • Tommy says:

Actually, that’s not true. The RNC’s communications director took to Twitter straight after Queen’s We Are The Champions was used in a similar vein (and Queen objected) saying, quite rightly, that as long as the RNC pays the BMI license they don’t need permission.

The whole subject is covered in this article by Melinda Newman in Forbes: http://www.forbes.com/sites/melindanewman/2016/07/19/why-queen-cannot-stop-trumps-use-of-we-are-the-champions/#c9f1ce64595c

Artists can (quite rightly) object all they like, but unfortunately they don’t have much legal ground to do anything about it.

  • Petros Linardos says:

Who has the copyright to the recording and what rights does it entitle them in this context?

  • Olassus says:

    It’s him or Crooked Hillary!

    • V.Lind says:

Crooked? She is not in his class. Bankrupt serially, his “university” built on themes like how to take make money out of foreclosures, plenty of bullying, cheating and general old-fashioned business-uber-alles stomping on people, he has not made much of America’s people other than as pawns in his own ruthless drive for profit in a very chequered career. His ignorance and isolationism would be disastrous, and how people can be MORONIC enough to take him seriously is frightening.

It’s bad enough in America, where the worship of dumbing down and the perfervid hostility to the intellectual and enlightened is endemic, but that anyone watching from a distance can see ANYTHING good in this candidate is beyond me.

I am not enamoured of Mrs. Clnton either, but she comes with experience and ability and that could steer America safely through a term while both parties regrouped and worked on developing other candidates. The very fact that so many from the party Trump has adopted are reluctant to support him should tell you a lot. The disaffection for Mrs. Clinton may, I fear, be enough to see him into a job for which he is singularly ill-equipped.

The British are worried about Boris Johnson (who I think will surprise you — pleasantly). That is as nought compared to the havoc this ignoramus is capable of wreaking every time he opens his mouth.

    • NYMike says:

Do you know HRC to be crooked, or are you just regurgitating the crap the GOP and the Donald keep repeating ala Goebbels?

  • Alvaro says:

Mhhhhh Classical Music fans that are Trump supporters. Mhhh, where have I seen this before? Mhhhh. Deutschland I think..

I am now ready for another “study” on how Classical Music promotes compassion, teamwork, openness, multiculturality, it makes you a better person, makes you better at math, etc…..

    • Milka says:

Mhhhhh observation is stupid and to compare it to “Deutschland ” speaks of
      ignorance to world history .
