    Why are there no comments?

    • Hans Winkler says:

It is really no big deal. But I think you are unfair. I don’t think he cancels more than any other singer. He is just more famous, so people pay attention. I saw him three times last month in Vienna. He cancelled not one of four Tosca performances, gave a recital in the Staatsoper and sang Mahler’s Lied von der Erde in the Musikverein where he sang both vocal parts. Bad idea by the way. Mahler knew why he wrote this for tenor and baritone or mezo

  • Hanna Nahan says:

Because there is nothing to say? A performer is obliged to cancel a series of performances due to ill health and is replaced by other performers. It’s hardly the fall of the Berlin Wall, is it…

  • Iain Scott says:

Because it is no longer news. I thought I was hearing Kaufmann on 3 separate occasions. Each time he cancelled . I took it personally.

    • Meal says:

“I took it personally.” Made my day 🙂 It is the same with me and Mrs. Netrebko. She withdraw from 2 of 3 events for which I had tickets. But I have avenged me. Last time (= 4th event), _I_ cancelled my participation in the audience due to illness… Back to Mr. Kaufmann: He can have an amazing, beautiful voice. But his voice appears to be fragile, from time to time even lacking power. Also therefore it is a very wise decision to retract if he doesn’t feel fit. It would be very pitty if his appealing voice became damaged.

  • Patricia Contino says:

We should start a club. He cancelled on me this past season at Carnegie and the previous one at the Met the season before when I delusionally thought he would show up for “Carmen”. I haven’t heard him sing live in 2 years and it looks like he won’t be back in NYC or anywhere else in North America for quite some time…

  • Dave says:

Maybe he and Netrebko should form a club.

    • Meal says:

Well, they tried (Manon Lescaut in Munich). But obviously Mrs. Netrebko did not want to be part of this club and withdraw.

To be fair: Later that year they gave an openair concert together (“Gipfeltreffen der Stars 2015”).

To be fair: Later that year they gave an openair concert together (“Gipfeltreffen der Stars 2015”). And unlike Kaufmann she is expected to sing in North America this season (Manon Lescaut at the Met) although she already started retracting (at least from some of the dates) …

  • Marshall says:

Unless he has some medical issue that we don’t know about, I’ve suggested before, that when a tenor in his absolute prime years cancels so much there may be some technical issues with his voice? I’ve never bought into Kaufmann as a true Italianate spinto tenor. I sometimes wonder if his, IMO, artificial top will break down. By the way I thought he was a fine Lohengrin.

Netrebko is a different situation. The voice has gone through a transformation-and she’s dropping certain roles.Yes, she doesn’t want to do Manon Lescaut, but at least at the Met in recent years she has sung.

  • Stephen Diviani says:

Given previous health problems & to be quite blunt, I think it’s good idea to wish him well or else to shut up.

    • Marshall says:

To be quite blunt people are free to view it differently, that’s the way the world works-and you don’t have to shut up
