In her day of the long knives, Theresa May has told John Whittingdale that his services are no longer required.

Whittingdale won’t be widely mourned. He was anti-BBC and disinterested in serious culture.

He tweeted: ‘Has been a privilege to serve as Culture Secretary. I wish my successor every success & will continue to support creative industries.’
