I’ve heard of a church in Germany that screens football matches, with the organist improvising along. Needless to say, being in Germany, I suspect he needs more fanfares than funeral marches.

  • Meal says:

First, I thougth that they wanted to screen the match during a normal performance which would be unacceptable to everyone. Now, I understand that they are going to play the hymns and will do something similiar to accompanying a silent film. However, this will be much more difficult since neither the orchestra nor the conductor will know in advance how the play will go on. Can this work?

    • John Borstlap says:

Of course it will work, nobody will listen anyway.

What you first thought was apparently what you were meant to think. As you say, this is an event planned around the football, not football imposed upon a concert audience. I do not understand why the blog host does these things — it is utterly misleading, and that is a charitable interpretation.

It sounds like an experiment, and should provide fun for those who attend. And will no doubt contribute to revenue. Where’s the harm? IT IS NOT PRETENDING TO BE A CLASSICAL NIGHT OUT.

Of course it will work. A soccer game is little more than an hour and a half of sameness: dribble-dribble-dribble-pass, dribble-dribble-dribble-steel (repeat 400 times). If you are lucky it does not end in a 0-0 tie.
I recommend a Philip Glass score.
