In memory of an enterprising fortepianist
mainNaxos are bringing forward the release today of a fourth album of Clementi sonatas played by Susan Alexander-Max, US-born founder of the London chamber ensemble The Music Collection and former professor at the Guildhall School of Music.
Susan died in January of cancer, her death unrecorded in public media.
A sad loss.
I heard her play a concert on clavichord. Beautiful playing with rich musicianship.
I learned of her death today – 7/27/20 – opening her Naxos Clementi Vol 4 CD – an In Memoriam note by presumably her daughter or sister Jessica is included.
Very little information on the www as you suggest; I think that probably reflects well on her; she led what used to be called a private life. Photos suggest she may not have reached the age of 60. That Naxos disk was recorded in March 2015.
I highly recommend that Zippoli recording above. The instrument itself is simply gorgeous – it may be the oldest extant piano built in 1720 – and it has not often been recorded.
Not easy to find! In the UK it seems available only as a download. In the US, only from albanyrecords dot com. I ordered it just now. Rest in Peace
