A humble maestro is honoured in Dresden

Herbert Blomstedt, 88, has been named Honorary Conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle.

He is only the second conductor, after Sir Colin Davis, to be awarded that title.

  • A profound musician. I had the great good luck to hear him conduct the San Francisco Symphony as I was growing up in San Francisco. He conducted some heroic Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Schoenberg, Strauss–and Nielsen! There were plans to play and record Reger and Hilding Rosenberg, but Decca scuttled those. May Blomstedt live to be 108 years of age, conducting till the end!
