  • Mr Oakmountain says:

Surely the acoustics cannot be THAT bad?

    • Sixtus says:

I’ve been there. They are. I wonder if the film also has a scene with the seemingly obligatory action-movie destruction of the Brooklyn Bridge.

      • someone says:

        How much bad are they?

I’ve found an article about its acoustics.
        http://content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2097247,00.html

” Music insiders have been grumbling about the building for years. Edo de Waart, the former chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, once threatened to boycott the building because of the bad acoustics. Matt Ockenden, an Australian bassoonist, has likened listening to a performance in the Concert Hall to watching it on a 1980s-era television. ”

        Are they really that bad?
        Seriously?

I was totally fascinated when I first saw the night view of it.
It was a kind of shock.

Having been there for a performance as well, I go along with the others that the acoustics (in the main opera auditorium itself) really aren’t the greatest – e.g. the orchestra indeed tends to sound very thin and dry, which wasn’t all that great for the “Tannhäuser” I went to see at the time. I think the October 1988 recording on DVD of “Die Meistersinger von Nuernberg”, for example, conducted in the Sydney Opera House by Charles Mackerras, highlights the thin sound quite well (… while still remaining a highly recommendable version on disc).

Meanwhile, said Edo de Waart is now Music Director of the NZSO in Wellington, New Zealand, across the Tasman, where the acoustics of the respective concert halls in which the orchestra plays (at least currently in Wellington and Auckland) tend to be much better!

            Sad.
It looks beautiful, but it sounds poor.

I feel the same when I see and hear a musician who looks good but sounds bad.

The building won’t be destroyed because it looks good.
            How about musicians?
            Not sure.
