At last, Petrenko goes to Berlin. With the wrong orchestra

The Berlin Philharmonic have yet to announce when they will get a chance to play with their next music director, who was elected almost a year ago but doesn’t start til 2019. Apparently, the intensively private Kirill Petrenko, 44, is keeping them guessing.

That said, he has just announced a date at the Berlin Festival this September. Phew.

In the Philharmonie.

With the orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera.

    Not the visit by Petrenko with his current orchestra in Berlin, that’s a non-issue, but the whole cabale leaves one indeed wondering. First by the fact, how few engagements Petrenko a) had before his election, and b) will have in the interim period between designation and official beginning. It just doesn’t make any sense.

    And second, the handling of the obvious irritation by those responsible for the PR, leaves much room for speculation, not by what is being said, but by what is NOT being said.

    Will we after all have room for unforeseen developments over this very long waiting period, and does Mr. T. maybe keep his knifes sharpened?

    I would speculate, that Petrenko will actually not start his Berlin Phil term. He loves to work in opera, that’s his home. With the position at Berlin Phil, unless he gets a contract with a small amount of minimum concert weeks, like Karajan’s six weeks, that allow another music director position at an opera house, he will not be happy.

    Possibly the current apparent distance between Petrenko and Berlin, and playing on time, is due to intense backroom negotiations about such contractual framework. Just an educated guess.
