Friends are mourning the passing of Kate Light, a published poet, Hunter College teacher and a violinist in the New York City Opera orchestra. Kate, who was in her 50s, endured a struggle with breast cancer.

My dearest Kate, I had no idea you were sick. I wish I could have been there for you. After all of our years as stand partners I have so many wonderful memories of this incredible “Rennaissance” woman, who despite her petite stature did everything with strength and courage. Your writing made me love poetry again. It was the first poetry I read to my daughter who now is a writer. When she was born ,you gave her a little stuffed bunny. She has carried it with her for 20 years and I always think of you. You touched more lives then you could ever know, Kate. I was so lucky to be one of them.

She was one of the best and kindest professors I had in college. I never did great in literature classes and only took her class as an elective to get the required credits for that semester. I thought I wouldn’t like it. But I was so wrong. We wrote short stories and poems almost every week and it was a fun and enjoyable experience. I still have those works to this day and am glad I enjoyed something outside my typical interests. Rest in Peace Professor Light.
