David Effron, conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, will preside over his last concert tonight, after 18 years as professor of conducting.

Notice from IU: Congratulations to Professor David Effron, who will retire from the Jacobs School of Music in May 2016, after 18 years on the faculty. This performance marks his final appearance conducting a Jacobs School of Music ensemble as a faculty member. We sincerely thank him for his many years of dedicated teaching, creative vision, and continued inspiration.

Congratulations to Maestro Effron on a terrific career. He is a master, and I was one of the fortunate ones who got to play under him at summer festivals some years ago. His knowledge is vast and his command of the repertoire impressive. Bravo!

Trust me, it is his last performance as a faculty member and not his final performance with Jacobs School of Music.

  • Jean Rhoads says:

Maestro David Effron has been my favorite Jacobs School of Music conductor for a number of years. I got to see him conduct his last pre-retirement concert tonight. I hope to see him as a guest conductor sometime soon. Jean Rhoads

This was a heart-stopping headline, especially with so much bad news in recent weeks. We hope that David Effron conducts for a couple more decades at least.

  • Pamela Frame says:

David Effron taught so much to many Eastman students. I am very grateful to him for that!

  • Bruce says:

Looks like he had a much more fulfilling career at Indiana than he seemed to be having at Eastman, at least when I was a student there. His lashings-out at students always seemed to be coming from a place of unhappiness rather than real cruelty. I’m glad things got better for him.

Thanks, David! I was one of the only sophomores @ Eastman to play @ Heidelberg…..
