Team Lang Lang tweeted today: I’m in shock today over Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s passing. He was such a special, genuine, sincere, and talented musician & human being.

It’s the collision of two world ! Old europe versus show biz. You have just to look at that horrible american cap Lang Lang wear at the begining to understand …

    • Alex says:

We need show biz in classical music, we need people like Nigel Kennedy, Igudesman & Joo, Gilles Apap etc., as much as we need people of ‘old europe’ world, as you name it – otherwise in concert halls we would see only white hair in the audience – and that’s not good, not good

      • Eddie Mars says:

I frankly doubt we ‘need’ them. But they prove unavoidable.

        • V.Lind says:

Apparently they do around here. Of all the many people who must have responded to the death of Mr. Harnoncourt, we are treated to a tweet from Lang Lang (so NL is a follower of Lang Lang — probably always seeking a way to carp at him or trip him up).

What a shabby little self-promoter it is: how dare he try to cash in on the death of this great man, to whom he had gone as a supplicant to assist him in his learning!

This eternal suggestion that Lang Lang is always guilty of something is getting very tiresome. He paid tribute to a teacher he obviously held in high regard, and yet it still provides an opportunity for at least implied mockery on Slipped Disc. It is one thing to criticise someone for a genuine failing. But persecution for doing anything at all becomes a little disturbing.

          • Holly Golightly says:

Absolutely agree!! Lang Lang is a fine musician and a great mentor to other music students. And he really admired our dearly beloved Harnoncourt!!

    • Fabio Luisi says:

Don’t underestimate Lang Lang. He might tend (and he does) to the show-biz, but he has always been in search of advice.

      • Lloyd Arriola says:

Amen! I used to complain about Lang Lang lots, but when Horowitz used to call on great older musicians for advice, this was considered good form. Lang Lang has always been modest enough to ask for advice from important intellectuals with big ears. Bravo, Lang Lang–may you find the path to greater enlightenment, energy, and editication!

  • cherrera says:

You know who’s the ultimate show-biz musician?

    Mozart.

The great ones always are, whether Sophocles or Shakespeare, Karajan or Count Basie.
