Every year before Easter, John Nelson conducts one of Bach’s big oratorios in Chicago.

Not this year.

John came down with pneumonia.

Sorry to hear of Maestro Nelson’s illness. Had the pleasure of working with him recently, looking forward to doing so again.

A John Nelson performance of one of the great sacred works is a sacred thing to behold, so this was Chicago’s loss — but Bravo to David Gier, one of those first-rate, hard-working domestic American conductors who’s been under the radar for too long.
