Just in from the LA Phil:

LOS ANGELES, January 28, 2016 – Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), led by LA Phil Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, will perform during the Pepsi Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show on Sunday, February 7 on CBS.

The show will echo elements of the NFL’s On the Fifty campaign – honoring the past, recognizing the present and looking ahead to the next 50 years. Global superstars and winners of seven Grammy Awards Coldplay will perform, among other acts.

“This is a wonderful honor and an extraordinary showcase for YOLA, as well as a tribute to youth orchestras worldwide,” said Dudamel. “When we play, it will be for the youth of the world so they can be inspired to create both a better life for themselves and a better future.”

Kudos to the LA Philharmonic, Yola, and the Dude!!

Your brethren in the New York Philharmonic Education applaud your commitment to our youth, and cheer you on.

It seems there is no limit to the using children as shills .

    • Jennifer says:

If that’s your thought, then you don’t know these kids and you don’t know YOLA.

      • Jess says:

Jennifer, I agree with you! Theses kids are amazing!!! My son is part of the YOLA orchestra. This program is a blessing! And it’s damn worth it to come to class 4-5times a week to hear such talent! And it’s free!

      • Milka says:

What an ignorant reply —no one has criticized the “kids ” who I am sure are delightful
and give their all to this venture . Children in their honesty can always be manipulated
to serve an adults machinations .
Just remember a certain conductor did wonders with kids then dumped them when
an umpteen $ contract was waved in his face .

    • Jess says:

Shills????……..My son is part of this program and these kids have been working very hard! The teachers are amazing!!! YOLA is highly looked up to across the U.S. These talented kids constantly perform at the Walt Disney Hall and Hollywood Bowl with famous musicians. Plus they have opportunities to travel out of the country. It’s amazing to hear them rehearse 4-5 times a week. And I’m damn proud parent! YOLA has opened doors for these kids!

I must apologise. ‘Milka’ is a notorious troll on this site, whose views don’t reflect the opinions or attitudes of the vast majorority of this site’s members.

I hope you and your son are not offended – you can safely ignore Milka’s views. We all do!! :))

Deborah Borda’s marketing ploy just paid off big time.

      • Alvaro says:

What a surprise. Enemigooublico taking time off the day to criticize all and everything Dudamel does. Must really suck not to have these platforms for yourself or for the other “indignada” who thinks deserves these platforms..

Psychotic response linking dudamel with Chavez in 3…..2…..1……GO!

  • Peter says:

    What is “superbowl”?

  • V.Lind says:

Apart from Peter’s rubbish — he has internet use but no google function, apparently — this can not be seen as anything but good news. For a young orchestra to be invited to participate in this very high-profile event is good fun for the kids, and, unless they just do a medley of Coldplay covers, a small opportunity for classical music. If the invitation has come because Dudamel is a celebrity, that is a pretty positive thing too. Aside from Lang Lang, there are very few other classical music celebs. And while I for one would rather swallow prussic acid than be a celebrity, it is nonetheless the marker of our times, and can only be god for the dissemination of real music. The more “household names” classical music can put about, the better.

And while I do not relish a pop medley — and doubt we will see one — it will probably be lighter fare or more familiar material from the classical or semi-classical repertoire. It is, after all, a football game (Peter). But they are an ORCHESTRA, not three guitars and a drummer. It will be music beyond strum/strum/change chord. At this stage in the progression of classical music, to judge by the doom and gloom around here about sales figures and aging attendance, baby steps.

    • Alvaro says:

Make ABSOLUTELY NO MISTAKE, we WILL see a pop medley. What do u think they will play, MAHLER? Just because Norman says so?

Its going to be the Mambo of Bernstein, Star Wars FOR SSSSSSUUUUUUUUURE, and maybe a couple of venezuelan things and Mexican Danzon.

That is what classical music is these days: Acoustic pop. Accept it, put aside your austrian composers, place them in a nice museum, and bring on ELVIS (now categorized as “Classical Music” by Nielsen) and The Beatles, which most people in the world consider “classical Music”.

Its been real europe, but your time has passed.

Why do you go to the trouble of reading this blog?

        • Alvaro says:

          ENTERTAINMENT!

Seeing so many people detached from reality is almost like going to the Zoo.

The difference is that at least the animals are conscious of their situation while here a lot of people think they still live 100 years ago.

          Its actually hilarious.

          • M2N2K says:

If you just keep laughing and repeating your mantra to yourself, then some day you might actually start believing it, thus becoming the first and only person whom you have convinced.

  • Robert says:

Realize that what you will see on the screen is people pretending to play (“lip”-syncing, miming) to a pre-recorded track.

The logistics of setting up and micing a full orchestra in just a few minutes for live TV make any more than that just about impossible.

    • Stephen Owades says:

As a member of the Boston Symphony’s Tanglewood Festival Chorus, I sang in the pre-recorded chorus for the Boston Pops appearance in the pre-game festivities at the Super Bowl in 2002. As you surmise, the players on-field were lip-syncing, and there was a lip–sync chorus there as well (we didn’t travel to the game). The combination of time pressure, stadium acoustics, game-day field conditions, and miking problems meant that the show had to be recorded in advance; we did that in the comfort and sonic splendor of Symphony Hall.

I think the participation of YOLA and Gustavo Dudamel in this year’s game is a great idea. Although I don’t hold popular music in the same contempt as some commenters here, the appearance of a real orchestra can’t help but be a positive way of exposing a vast viewing public to that sight and sound, and the fact that it’s a youth orchestra (and a young conductor) is a good way of bypassing the “old fogey” image of orchestral music.

      • William Safford says:

        Thank you for your insights.

It is a bit sad, though, that it should have to be lip-synched. I suppose that an orchestra does not project as well as a marching band….

      • Milka says:

A farce is a farce no matter how you dress it .

  • cherrera says:

Historically, it has always been university marching bands and local high school marching bands, recently it has featured high school drumlines and drill teams. So with the Youth Orchestra of LA, it’s the same demographics. But sitting down.

  • RW2013 says:

    Simple pleasures for simple minds.

  • Jess says:

GO YOLA!!!! Proud to be part of this orchestral family!!!!

  • Itsjtime says:

    1. Congratulations to all of the young musicians involved in this exciting event.
    2. This is one of the worlds most watched televised events and having classical music represented is nice.

    3. Cam Newton is gonna rush for over 100yards, throw for 300 and the Panthers will win buy +10 points… He will also win the MVP of he Super Bowl,

    • Alvaro says:

Meanwhile, the IQ of the entire US population drops another 2 points, to an all time low.

      But who gives a F{^|%! It’s entertainment!

Bring some beer to the tailgate and lets eat nachos and salsa while we vote for trump to kick off the mexicans (Damn, that Guacamole is good!)

  • GSA says:

Don’t feed the trolls (you all know who they are)! 😉 Go YOLA (someone should figure out how to create some sort of slogan that pairs YOLO with YOLA, by the way) & Dudamel. I’m sure you’ll have a great time while performing! I’ll be watching and supporting.
