Death of a modernist composer

Franco Oppo, a Darmstadt disciple who taught all his life at Cagliari, has died at 80.

Fascinated by aleatory possibilities, he wrote a number of concertos and sonatas, mostly involving piano.

  • I was at the piano for the first performance of his big Piano Concerto (in Spain), and years later I conducted the first performance of his beautiful second Piano Concerto (with a wonderful Pietro De Maria at the piano).
What a open-minded musician he was!!

  • The piece in the video is really nice, you keep listening, it is full of surprises. Not very Darmstadtesque.
