The philanthropist has posted a Youtube video in memory of her friend, Gilbert Kaplan, who died on New Year’s Day.

New online, here’s a 30-minute BBC-TV documentary I made about Gil  Kaplanin 1987 (not as listed), titled ‘Mahler and the Millionaire’.

I think that’s a grey cord suit I’m wearing, very hipster. The hair, too, is of its time.

Enjoy.

Has anyone been able to locate online the documentary shot during the recording of his first “Mahler second” album, and broadcast once on BBC tv 2, as somebody said in a comment to last week’s article on this website ?

  • Petros LInardos says:

Thank you for bringing to our attention your documentary. Very interesting indeed. I was particularly fascinated by Maureen Forrester’s comments on conductors.

  • Peter Phillips says:

Thank you for finding the programme, as I had suggested, and enabling us to see it. My wife and I were in the combined choir and even saw our younger selves briefly. But, above all, seeing the film again brought back the excitement and the electricity of the occasion – both occasions, since GK wanted to re-record the last movement. As I recall, although the LSO Chorus are credited on the liner, they were not present for the retake. The choir line-up was the BBC National Chorus of Wales, the Dyfed Choir, Cardiff Polyphonic Choir and the Ardwyn Singers, all coached by John Hugh Thomas. Thank you again, Norman; seeing it at this distance was a remarkably emotional experience.

  • Rick says:

Thank you for uploading this. First time viewing this documentary. Mr Kaplan is an inspiration to all who want to follow their passion.

  • R says:

I listened to the whole of Oskar Fried’s Mahler 2 last night and found it to be the finest interpretation of Mahler 2 I have ever heard.

  • Peter says:

The video is blocked in many countries, because the Youtube parasites and enemies of us musicians and content creators do not want to pay their usage fees.
