Equity, the actors union, has gone over the head of the Arts Council to implore the Culture Secretary to intervene on behalf of beleaguered English National Opera.

The union’s general secretary Christine Payne said Sectretary of State John Whittingdale should confirm his commitment to the company.

Specifically, ‘We believe it would help the debate on the future of opera in London if you could publicly confirm your commitment to opera as an art form, especially sung in the English language, and that London should continue to have two full-time and dedicated opera companies.’
