Just in: All Japanese out of Hamamatsu piano finals

There were five in the semis, and the jury chair is Japanese. But none of the five made the cut, which suggests it’s a fair contest. What’s more, none of the finalists’ teachers are on the jury.

The six finalists this weekend are:

Alexei MELNIKOV – Russia

Daniel HSU – USA

Alexander GADJIEV – Italy

    What a peculiar rationale. Would it have suggested a fixed or an unfair contest, had one Japanese pianist been among the finalists?
