We have seen letters from four of Europe’s prime ensembles, appealing to the Danish government not to decimate the historic orchestra of the Royal Theatre.

The outcry, led by Daniel Barenboim, has been taken up by Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, as well as Barenboim’s Berlin Staatskapelle, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the principal cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic, who writes: ‘it is one of the world’s finest orchestras’.

Here’s Rattle’s brief (auf Deutsch):

Most frequent google searches in Danish government circles currently:

    “Who is Daniel Barenboim”
    “Who is Simon Rattle”
    “Who is Berlin Philharmonic”

No rich Danes to pick up the tab?

Define “rich”. Denmark is a rich country, still. In a cultural sense. Isn’t that the most important meaning of rich?
Now they are trying to get rid of their richness, who knows why.
Maybe because they simply don’t know the true meaning of rich anymore?

I am always amused when celebrities, in this case conductors, write letters urging a government or populace to back whatever concern. If these conductors pulled some money out of their fat wallets I would take their pleas more seriously.
