The Royal Concertgebouw has scrambled up subs for Andris Nelsons, who is out for several weeks with a shoulder complaints. Here’s the announcement:

The concert on 11 December will be conducted by Paavo Järvi. The programme will remain unchanged: Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto featuring Baiba Skride’s first performance with the RCO, Le tombeau de Couperin and the second suite from Daphnis et Chloé – both by Ravel.

The concert performances of Wagner’s opera Lohengrin on 18 and 20 December will be conducted by Sir Mark Elder. A highly experienced Wagner conductor, the Englishman has made regular guest appearances with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since 1996.

As long as Andris Nelsons goes on conducting with his current body language, he will have physical complaints.

    • RW2013 says:

      You call that conducting?

      • Prewartreasure says:

With respect, sir or madam, from that vapid and fatuous comment I am led to assume you have never shared in the utter delight of watching Andris in action thereby witnessing a consummate musician able to produce such exquisite and passionate results.

He’s a whole new and refreshing experience – and I make that judgement based on more than 55 years of concert going.

    • Holger H. says:

He has time now to watch all the videos with Richard Strauss and Karl Böhm as conductors, and learn from their technique how to conduct in the future with less than 10% of his former energy consumption and strain on the body. It also leaves more oxygen, which was previously consumed by the muscles, for the brain, which can be beneficial for some conductors, I was told.

  • Charles G. Clark-Maxwell says:

…and Boulez. He could conduct the Rite of Spring, Stockhausen’s Gruppen and a thousand other pieces barely breaking a sweat

  • Brian says:

The curse of the Boston Symphony…

  • Holger H. says:

Seriously, his borderline spastic moves break any musical flow. Watch the recent Alpensinfonie in BerlinPhil Digital Concert Hall. He is the Anti-Conductor in that concert. He destroys the music, hinders the musicians in getting into the flow. He is hypermotoric, the Germans call that “Zappelphilipp” and needs to calm down.

It’s a sign of our times that conductors are “successful” who LOOK energetic…
