Scots tuba player wins Berlin audition
mainRoss Knight, 23, has won a two-year position with the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra academy. He will play with the Berlin Phil whenever a second tuba is needed or when its principal tuba, Alexander von Puttkamer, is unavailable.
Ross, who is principal tuba of the European Union Youth Orchestra, will make his Berlin Phil debut next month as principal tuba in Pelleas et Melisande, Simon Rattle conducting.

Congratulations, but where are the posts about the other candidates that the academy brings?
A friend of mine – from bolivia! – won the basoon position years ago. That a guy from a small developing country achieves this merits no post, but if you are from scotland it does? To me the former has MUCH more merit.

agreed. though it is quite an accomplishment to win an academy spot in this or any orchestra, I don’t see why this is is suddenly newsworthy…
I think it’s merely a slow news day, Alvaro. While Norman does fly the Union Jack rather high and rather proudly from time to time, I doubt nationality has much to do with this post.
Otherwise, he surely wouldn’t have missed Julian Scott, another Scotsman, winning an oboe position just 2 months ago and Hannah Morgan from England also winning a position in the oboe section last year.
Given the fact that Britons in the Karajan Akademie are quite a frequent occurrence, I too agree that reporting on a Bolivian musician or on the Turkish and Egyptian violinists currently in the academy would have been more interesting.
