The Deutsche Sinfonie Orchester (DSO-Berlin), casting around for a music director to succeed Tugan Sokhiev who has moved to the Bolshoi, have named their next chief.

He is Robin Ticciati, 32, music director at Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He will have to give up one of those jobs when he begins in Berlin, two years from now.

The deal was done by AskonasHolt, city brokers of Simon Rattle bonds.

I think surely by far the more exciting conductor news for Berlin today is this one… http://imgartists.com/news/vladimir_jurowski_named_chief_conductor_and_artistic_director_of_rsb/

  • Michael Hermann says:

Robin Ticciati is a fabulous appointmnt! He’s truly one of the most promising conductors of his generation. Well done DSO Berlin for getting him!

  • Manu says:

Stays in hands of Askonas Holt… Just moved one agent’s desk ahead.
Not very imaginative (nor motivating) choice…

    • CDH says:

What’s wrong with Askonas Holt? One of the better firms around as far as I (and its impressive client list) know. And surely an agency is there to help its clients with opportunities — to broker them, in Norman’s image?

  • Manu says:

I have the impression that the manager of this orchestra is only making politics, no real artistic risk or motivation in this choice. The orchestra musicians probably like Ticciati because he does not challenge them too much, it’s comfortable choice, also for them.

    • Markus says:

Yes, the manager is a huge sucker to the London agents. No spine and never takes risks. Disappointing.

    • Holger H. says:

It’s a difficult orchestra to govern it seems.
-No apparent artistic profile or ambition.
-In the city with the biggest orchestra density and competition in the whole world.
-As the west Berlin radio orchestra surviving several attempts of merger with the “other half”, the former east Berlin radio orchestra, since the reunification just barely, mostly riding piggy-back to the political skills of Marek Janowski, the other concerned orchestra’s, the RSO’s, outgoing chief conductor.

  • Chris says:

A great choice. I heard his Berlin debut (Britten, Bruckner 4), which was exciting. Great news for Berlin, great news for the orchestra which has a history of growing with young conductors: Young Lorin Maazel and Riccardo Chailly were here… Can’t wait to here Robin’s concerts with DSO.

  • Nick says:

Why would he have to give up either the SCO or Glyndebourne? The latter obviously takes up about 4 months of the summer but his commitment to the SCO this season does not involve many weeks. With Edinburgh relatively close to Berlin, combining the two will still leave plenty of time for guest engagements elsewhere. After all, Sokhiev seems only to give the DSO only 6 weeks this season.

  • Pedro says:

Ticciati was very disappoiting at the Bozar in Brussels a few months ago with the Concertgebouw. Once more, the orchestra was much better than the conductor – something that happens very often today. An unpowerful La Mer. When I heard the piece a few months before in the same venue by Rattle and the BPO I though the same. My fault of course.

    • Max Grimm says:

Your fault and mine. In concerts I have attended or viewed in the past few months, I have frequently been impressed by the readings of so called “small-time” conductors, while some of the “conducting gods” have presented us with solid 08/15 interpretations.

  • Simon says:

Really good news for this excellent and vibrant orchestra, really good news for Berlin and really good news for Ticciati himself!

    • RW2013 says:

Yes, very good orchestra (they play very well under many conductors, and they especially like the Altmeister like Blomstedt and Norrington), but what do you find interesting about RT?
Of all the guest conductors last season, he was the weakest, delivering a very shaky Bruckner 4. Pity the orchestra as a whole does not have a say…

  • john2 says:

it is not the best choice – RT is a giftet musician, but he has difficulties in complex repertoire with strong technical demands…. Bamberg did a much better choice with Jakub Hrusa

  • Don Ciccio says:

Wow, first Harding and now Ticciati getting important posts that more talented maestros should have gotten instead. Rory Macdonald can’t be far away… 🙂
