What Jonas Kaufmann’s partner is doing

While he’s singing Rule, Britannia at the Royal Albert Hall tonight, his partner Christiane Lutz is directing a performance of Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria in Mainz.

She will be working for the first time with her father, the conductor Martin Lutz, director of Schiersteiner Kantorei and an authority on period instruments.

German media routinely refer to Kaufmann and Lutz as ‘life-partners’.

  • Mr Oakmountain says:

‘Life-partner’ (Lebensgefährte) is the standard German term for people who are in a long term relationship without seing the need of getting married at this point. It’s use is not unusual, and there are not many other words for it, since “Freund/Freundin” would be either just friends or teenagers in love.

  • Dekadent says:

    I prefer “Lebensabschnittspartner” ….

  • Urania says:

Oh, she is the daughter of Martin Lutz? For 20 years at least around in Wiesbaden and region, mostly in churches. Now with the help of Daughter (does work with Andreas Scholl as well) maybe does go ‘famous’…whatever. These kind of conncestions does please the press and might attract the public.

What happened to the wife of Jonas? Saw her once on stage as a mezzo I guess. She was a good performer. (Oh yes the pancakes, ice cream…for Norman – happily we do all this 🙂 ).

Margarete Joswig does indeed have a lovely mezzo voice. I have a Das Lied von der Erde alternating with Jonas that is quite good. She may be trying to reignite her career after raising their 3 children. She did sing a Winterreise last year in a concert tribute for her own father, Michael Joswig who is also an oratoris singer and choral conductor. How is that for a coincidence – both women are daughters of conductors. M Joswig has done a few other things that made it onto the internet (wounded warrriors, Hansek und Gretel)I would like to hear her Winterreise. Christa Ludwig’s interepretation is one of my favorites.

I was very sad when I read about the break-up of Kaufmann’s marriage. It appears to me that he is having a midlife crisis, a male menopause. Pity the children who particularly as teenagers need parents. I hope former wife Margarete finds her way back into a worthwhile career.
