Good guys: Vienna Philharmonic gives refugee benefit concert
mainIt’s the first major musical organisation to respond to the humanitarian crisis triggered by the Syrian war. The concert, on 28 September, will consist of two Mozart symphonies conducted by Christoph Eschenbach, with Elisabeth Kulman as soloist in Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder.
Musicians, soloist and conductor will all perform without fee.
The Vienna Philharmonic will soon be more diverse than the East-West Divan Orchestra if Austria keeps letting refugees in.
Indeed, as the level of diversity within the Vienna Philharmonic has clearly risen at an equal pace to that of Austria thus far…
Moreover, it is the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.
But no Asian member with an Asian family name. Interesting how such important details are overlooked.
Any change in the number of African-Americans in the main American orchestras?
Sarcasm, Mr. Osborne. I can’t think of a single orchestra (in Austria or elsewhere) whose level of diversity rose with an equal pace or resulted in a similar demographic makeup as that of the city/country it is based in.
Isn’t that wonderful !!!!!!!
Wonderful! I hope other institutions will follow the good example!
And a neutral reference to Eschenbach. At least he has proven to have generosity in his soul.
Eschenbach himself was a child in a refugee camp in 1946 …
“Liberated an orphan by foster mother, Wallydore Eschenbach (née Jaross), from refugee camp in Mecklenburg (then East Germany) sick with typhoid fever and settled in Wismar (then East Germany) with her” (source: Wikipedia)
28th Sept., 19.30: and where? At Wiener Konzerthaus!
Bravo to the Konzerthaus, Rico!
What,no cynical comment Norman? Well done VPO.
