No classical musicians endorse Bernie Sanders for President

The Democratic Party’s socialist candidate has released a list of artists who are lending him support.

There are many musicians among them but only two who are even marginally classical – the film composer Hans Zimmer and the blues composer Corky Siegel.

Does this mean classical music USA has written off Bernie’s chances?

Would many UK classical musicians sign a Jeremy Corbyn list?

A bit misleading Norman. Many of my friends are supporting and contributing to the Sanders campaign (as am I) but we are not celebrities so would not make this list. Indeed, the heart and soul of the campaign is about corralling the small votes that most American politicians ignore and the voters that have lost ground in all areas of their everyday life be it education, economic purchasing power, and health care.

  • Mark Henriksen says:

Sander’s posture is that of a populist. A classical music endorsement doesn’t support that “brand”. Its that simple.

  • Emil says:

“Classical Music” has issued a statement saying that it is not one monolithic blog speaking with one voice, and that its practitioners are grown-up and perfectly able to speak for themselves. Classical Music wishes to emphasize that there is no such thing as “Classical Music USA”, and that musicians form their own opinions as citizens, not as musicians.

  • william osborne says:

Celebrity classical musicians wouldn’t want to offend all those rich Republican donors and board members. They leave that to artists with more integrity…

  • Respect says:

Sorry, complete misread of politics among classical musicians.they divide up into dif fervent camps, with most falling into the middle. I do see large amounts of support for Sanders among my colleagues, the Clintons never had much of a reputation for supporting the arts. But it’s hardly the critical issue among U.S. politics these days……..

  • Vicky says:

A number of my professional-musician friends on Facebook are avid Sanders supporters. So we can’t hastily generalize from celebs what the rest of the classical symphonic world is thinking…

  • Robert Levine says:

Seems unlikely to me that Sanders sought endorsements from anyone in the classical field. And whose endorsement could help? Maybe Perlman or Ma; hard to imagine anyone else having enough name recognition to matter.

  • jaypee says:

Maybe not classical, but several great -and cool- musicians anyway: Bill Frisell, Steve Earle, David Crosby, Meshell Ndegeocello, Loudon Wainwright, Jeff Tweedy… Not bad!

  • MacroV says:

This post betrays either a staggering ignorance or disingenuousness about classical music in America, and politics. I’m sure many classical musicians support Sanders, but as others have said, there aren’t many such musicians who have any household name recognition. There’s no equivalent to Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Muti or Gergiev taking a political stand in their countries.

  • Herasmus Bedragon says:

Are you out of your mind or just ignorant?
I’m a classical musician and I support Bernie as do many of my colleagues!

  • Claire Bryant says:

You are mistaken and this post is peculiar. My real name is Claire Bryant. I am a classical cellist and I support Bernie Sanders, along with many other classical musicians. My question is what is the purpose/motivation for this post?

THIS IS a woman YOU WANT TO VOTE FOR?

NO MOTHER or father should ever vote for Hillary Clinton after reading how she laughed at this child rape victim. This is a very sick and disturbed woman. NO MORE HILLARY.
