The orchestra choice is a bit out-of-the-ordinary, but probably was given because of the disc’s contents and not any extraordinary abilities of the ensemble. There is a distinct German bias to the winners (performers or label), as there is often a UK bias to the Gramophone awards. I did like the breakdown of some awards into time periods — earlier music is pretty much ignored by the Grammys — even though there were no winners representing Medieval or Renaissance music.

Nice list. The usual suspects (e.g. Chailly/Gewandhaus/Brahms) are few. Refreshing to see new or little known artists and works win. How can you not be happy about Lapland Chamber Orchestra, John StorgÃ¥rds, Carolina Eyck, and Annu Salminen recording of Kalevi Aho’s Theremin Concerto and Horn Concerto? And Nico Muhly pulling off the Opera Recording of the Year (19th century opera) trophy is some feat.
