Two new releases have arrived of Paavo Järvi’s Bruckner cycle from Frankfurt.

On the 4th symphony he’s looking sombre.

By the 6th he has got a sheepish grin.

Which one will sell more? We’ll let you know in due course.

This is very likely far-fetched, but I did wonder whether the two expressions might perhaps represent a subtle commentary on the two symphonies. Bruckner himself said of the Sixth ‘die sechste ist die keckste’, so, I don’t know, the cheekiest or sauciest of his symphonies; and the Fourth is of course often called ‘the Romantic’ ( not, I think, by the master himself). And given that Maestro Jaervi’s sombreness also looks a bit dreamily romantic and his sheepishness also a bit impish… No, I don’t really believe it myself. It would be interesting anyway to know which sells more. You’ d assume the Fourth, of course, but maybe the time of the Sixth is at last coming. It’s a fantastic work, anyway.

Why do the labels insist on these maestro shots ?

Admittedly PJ is slightly better looking than old Anton, but he’s not an oil painting. So a bit of art or a photo of Linz or pretty much anything would be better to see.

Seriously?! Who goes to the shop to look at CDs in the rack to purchase anymore? And at what point would a tiny thumbnail image influence an Internet purchase? Come on.

Good point, but I am not sure it applies to all countries. Can someone give an update about where one can still find brick and mortar records stores? What about the far east?
