Next week marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mario del Monaco.
A repository of the great tradition, Mario enjoyed a huge international career after the War in all major houses. Posterity has been less kind to his memory, eclipsing him between the long shadows of Bjorling and Pavarotti.
Mario deserves better.

Mario Sereni, who sang leading baritone roles for 27 seasons at the Metropolitan Opera, died on July 15 in his birthplace, Perugia, aged 87.
Mario had a lovely voice and formidable technique but he was overshadowed at the Met by US baritones Leonard Warren and Robert Merrill. His art is well represented on record.

A Hollywood first?
We are reliably informed that the soundtrack of Mission Impossible 5, which premièred yesterday at the Vienna State Opera, has the Vienna Philharmonic, chorus and soloists perform excerpts from Turandot.
About 20 minutes of the movie plays around, in and on top of the roof of the State Opera building.
Turandot is sung by Lise Lindstrom, who will play the role next season in Vienna. The tenor is Gregory Kunde.

Simon Mellor, Executive Director Arts and Culture for Arts Council England, has been deputed to work two days a week in Manchester as project director for the new £78m Factory theatre.
Let’s figure this out: either the ACE doesn’t need a full-time exec director, or Manchester’s project is in such trouble that the rest of England can go hang two days a week while the boss dons a hard hat.
Either way, the ACE’s clumsy executive structure needs cutting down. Too many bosses, not enough work.

The Beijing International Music Competition has called off its violin contest in September after it ‘encountered serious financial difficulties’.

The French pianist who caused a sensation at the Tchaikovsky Competition has given his first in-depth interview to Bertrand Boissard, at Parlons Piano.
Among other topics, he discusses his Russian teacher Rena Shereshevskaia, his two years working at a supermarket till, his preference for learning Prokofiev by ear and his favourite pianists of all time, singling out among French artists the little-known Marcelle Meyer.

It’s not easy or cheap to perform, but with Audi on board as sponsors the heat-seeking Minguet Quartet put on a rare and widely-anticipated performance of the airborne work in Ingolstadt.
Then bits started falling off.
Viola player Aroa Sorin withdrew after a test flight.
She was replaced by Munich orchestra player Felix Gargerle, who was meant to be introducing the performance. He, in turn, was replaced on stage by an Audi flak who called for more Vorsprung, the festival’s brand name.
The Minguet’s second violin Annette Reisinger was looking green. She asked for a sick bag. Apparently she used it.
The show was a shambles.

Influential friends of Stefan Arzberger, leader of the Leipzig Quartet who is under investigation in New York after a naked hotel rampage, have formed a defence fund to meet his legal costs and personal expenses during months of enforced unemployment. Stefan is accused of attempted murder of a fellow-guest at the hotel. He will face a judge again next month.
A defence account has been opened in Munich and a number of benefit concerts are planned.
Supporters include Dietlinde Turban-Maazel, the conductor’s widow, and former Gasteig concert hall director, Prof. Dr. Eckard Heintz. Details and account number below.
Leipzig/München, 22. Juli 2015. Nach einigen lokalen Freundeskreisen in Leipzig macht sich nun auch ein bundesweiter Unterstützerkreis stark für den Geiger Stefan Arzberger.
Der Primarius des Leipziger Streichquartetts sitzt seit 27. März 2015 in New York fest, weil die Justiz ihm Mordversuch an einer 64-jährigen Amerikanerin vorwirft. Arzberger war auf einer Konzertreise in Amerika, als er in eine ebenso rätselhafte wie fatale Affäre verwickelt wurde. Fest steht, dass ihm Geld, Kreditkarten und sein Ipad im Hotelzimmer gestohlen wurden von einer Person, die ihn auf sein Zimmer begleitet hat und kurz danach mit dem Diebesgut verschwand. Einige Stunden nach dem Diebstahl irrte Arzberger auf dem Hotelflur herum und soll sich nach Zeugenaussagen als Zimmerservice ausgegeben haben oder auch um Hilfe gerufen haben. Nach etwa 20 Minuten öffnete eine Dame ihre Türe und Arzberger soll ihr an den Hals gegriffen haben. Kurz darauf erschien Hotelpersonal und setzte ihn fest.
Arzberger selbst kann sich an nichts mehr erinnern. Seine Anwälte gehen davon aus, dass ihm KO-Tropfen verabreicht wurden. In jüngster Zeit hatte es in New York eine Welle von teils aberwitzigen, teils brutalen Raubdelikten mit KO Tropfen gegeben. Trotz mehrfacher Bitten hatte die New Yorker Polizei aber von entsprechend Blut- und Drogentests unmittelbar nach der Tat abgesehen.
Der Primarius des weltberühmten Leipziger Streichquartetts steht finanziell vor dem Ruin. Seit Monaten verfügt er über keine Einnahmen mehr, sein Quartett musste einen Ersatzmann einstellen. Er hat bereits über 100.000 Dollar als Kaution und etwa den gleichen Betrag für Anwalts-, Gerichts- und Aufenthaltskosten ausgegeben. Auch Gelder für psychologische Gutachter und Ermittler werden gebraucht. Seine Frau steht vor der Aufgabe der gemeinsamen Wohnung in Leipzig.
Vor diesem Hintergrund hat sich ein Freundeskreis gebildet, der Arzberger mit Hilfe vor Ort und Geldspenden unterstützt. Zu diesem Kreis gehören:

Der Freundeskreis um Arzberger plant auch ein Benefizkonzert. Es ist derzeit für den 23. Oktober 2015 in München geplant. Weitere Informationen werden dazu in Kürze veröffentlicht.

Das geht weit über die Musikerfamilie hinaus und zeigt einmal mehr, dass und wie Musik Menschen verbindet. Moderne Drogen können uns den freien Willen und die Erinnerung nehmen. Und diese Drogen sind schon nach kurzer Zeit nicht mehr nachweisbar. Es kann uns alle jederzeit treffen. Lebrecht Music & Arts Photo library announces with great sadness the passing of Georg Anderhub, our superb performing arts photographer based in Lucerne, on 19 July 2015 aged 66.
We send our deepest condolences to his mourning family and friends. He worked with the Lebrecht photo library for many years and was always on hand to help us with special requests for the great musicians and conductors who passed in front of his insightful camera lens.
Georg’s close friend and colleague, Suzie Maeder, has written to us:
A brilliant photographer, he was not only a professional colleague but a friend since childhood. After graduating from the same high school in Lucerne we both embarked on a career in photography. Georg studied in Zurich whilst I moved to London. He first joined the Luzerner Neuste Nachrichten as a staff photographer but went freelance in 1994.
His love for music and theatre enabled him to create portraits of incredible insight and creativity and he has documented the Lucerne Festival since 1973. In books, newspapers, magazines and exhibitions his reportages about a wealth of subjects were published and shown. Georg was a superb visual storyteller.
Initial reports indicated the David Roth, general director of Kentucky Opera, died on Sunday when his car ran off the highway and hit a tree.
His family have now been told that Roth, 56, died of a heart attack while driving. Details here.
