Which BBC genius scheduled Cardiff Singer in Tchaikovsky Competition week?

It beggars belief the two of the world’s most-watched music contests are taking place in the same week.

Pre-selections at the Tchaik concide totday with preliminary rounds at Cardiff Singer of the World. The Tchaik is streaming on medici.tv, Cardiff on sonostream (up to 30 days).

You can’t watch both without going mad.

The Russians were never going to budge on the Tchaikovsky date.

So why didn’t the BBC show a little flexibility and shift Cardiff downwind to the end of the month? It can only be the loser in this contest. How many £100k BBC execs does it take to make the right decision?

Why does it have to be either or? We should be able to watch both, you know like reality shows?

  • Sergey says:

Hehe. The Tchaikovsky organisers claimed to have thought about the date when they shifted the competition by a year, from 2006, 2007, so as to, you guessed it, not coincide with the football world championship. Bingo. What is Cardiff next to the World cup? :-))))

The date of the BBC Cardif Singer competition was set in stone two years ago – and the 2017 dates are already announced. Yes, the Cardiff and Moscow events are both huge internationally, but they hardly attract the same viewing audience. You may be irked by the clash Norman, but I’d go as far as to say that the many thousands of patrons filling the concert halls of Cardiff this week don’t give a fig about what is happening in Moscow – and vice versa. You could of course climb down from your ivory tower and come and enjoy the Cardiff experience in person some time. I can reccommend it!

Slightly odd comment Martin. What on earth makes you think that people who enjoy opera not also enjoy ‘cello music? I would be astonished if there wasn’t a huge degree of crossover between the 2 audiences.
