We are very sorry to report the death, from ovarian cancer, of the vastly popular Margaret Juntwait, presenter of the Metropolitan Opera’s Saturday Afternoon Radio Broadcasts for the past decade.

Margaret sounded the same, whether on air or off. She was charming, personable, knowledgeable, unpretentious. A former opera singer, she knew her subject inside out and was unfailingly enthusiastic.

She will be very widely missed and hard to replace. Our sympathies to her family. First appreciation here.

Prayers to Margaret’s family and her colleagues at the Met; she’ll be missed by so many!

  • Mardi Ellen Hill says:

Hear her voice in my ears. Missed again and again.

  • MacroV says:

Oh, what a tragedy. Way too young. I thought Peter Allen would be a tough act to follow, but Margaret Juntwait was an outstanding host on the MET broadcasts.

  • David Reeks says:

So sad and shocked to hear this news. I wondered why she had been absent in the last few months.. I will miss her voice; she had become an integral part of the Met broadcasts.

  • Marg says:

I just can’t imagine anyone else in the job. Her voice was so special. My sincere sympathies to her family.

  • V.Lind says:

Condolences to her loved ones. Listening to her was an education, but always a true delight as well. She presented such a lively take on every aspect of opera.

  • Alex M Frankel says:

I am very sorry to hear the sad news!

  • Aline Bernstein says:

I have enjoyed listening to Margaret all these years. She was such an important part of the Met Opera broadcasts. Her comments and insights were always illuminating. She will be missed very, very much.

  • Una says:

This is terribly sad news, even when you only know people across the airwaves. And so young. A great loss as Margaret knew her stuff, and was always so nice, and the broadcast we got here in Britain was the Saturday afternoon one from New York. Fr Michael Owen Lee, that lovely Catholic father is another one you equate with that relay too and the quiz in days gone by.

  • Fabio Luisi says:

A highly competent, human and understanding person. I am going to miss her and all the wonderful interviews she did with me and with so many colleagues.
