The violinist is under doctor’s orders not to travel. She has withdrawn from several weeks of engagements, and from judging the Reine Elisabeth competition in Brussels.

She had been due to play the Walton concerto – a personal favourite – in Detroit.

At short notice, the orch were unable to find a US-based soloist of comparable calibre with the Walton under their fingers. So they booked NY-based Paul Huang to play the Sibelius.

Tessa Lark would’ve been a good American choice for Walton. She performed the Walton at the finals of the Indianapolis Violin Competition this past year. She sounded wonderful!

Paul is great though. Kudos to him and Sibelius.

  • Ken Kletzien says:

There is no question Paul Huang is of comparable calibre AND has the Walton comforyably under his fingers. (see this recent review) There must have been some other reason DSO opted to change the program. In any case, the Detroit is in for a treat.
