DG are about to release their first harpsichord album in three decades.

Mahan Esfahani convinced Steve Reich that his Piano Phase would work just as well on an instrument of Bach’s time, and even better with a Bach companion piece.

The result? Well, here’s a forestaste.

Reich is sooo boring. And doesn’t even sell. So what’s the point? A label must sell great art and mix it with stuff that sells, so they actually can do the great art. Problem with DG is: they don’t have people anymore who know what great art actually is. Nor do they have people anymore who know what sells. Two essential competencies a classical label must have to be successful.

But all the best to this inspired artist Mahan Esfahani with his DG debut.

Mahan seems like a really nice musician but completely misses the compositional points of both Bach harmonic patterns and Reich phasing movements. Amazing, actually.

I think this sounds like a great idea. Can’t wait to hear it.
